26+ Years of Archaeological Progress in Southern Texas

Friends and associates of Dr. Jimmy Mitchell, one of the founders and key members of the STAA, will be saddened to learn of his sudden, unexpected death on December 19, 2000.
To say that he will be missed is an understatement of the greatest magnitude.
Those wishing to remember Dr. Mitchell in a tangible way may donate to the Jimmy L. Mitchell Archaeological Scholarship Fund. Make your check payable to "South Texas Archaeological Association" and mail to:

The association was established in December 1973 with about 45 members and rapidly grew to a continuing level of about 450 individuals.
The organization has several major objectives:
To develop a coordinated program of site survey and site documentation;
To preserve the archaeological record of the region through a concerted
effort to reach all persons interested in the prehistory of the region;
To initiate problem-oriented research activities which will help
us to better understand the prehistoric inhabitants of this area;
To conduct emergency surveys or salvage archaeology where it is necessary
because of imminent site destruction;
To publish a quarterly journal, newsletters, and special publications
to meet the needs of the membership;
To assist those desiring to learn proper archaeological field and
laboratory techniques; and,
To develop a library for members' use of all the published material dealing with southern Texas. The STAA Library is located at the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of the University of Texas at San Antonio, Loop 1604, just west of IH-10. Contact CAR for access.

Membership Pledge: All members shall agree to abide by the following statement of ethics:
"I pledge that I will not intentionally violate the terms and conditions of any Texas Antiquities Statutes, as same as now exist, or shall hereafter be amended or enacted, or engage in the practice of buying or selling artifacts for commercial purposes or engage in the willful destruction or distortion of archaeological data or disregard proper archaeological field techniques."![]()
